Have you met... Chelsea Livingstone?

Have you met Chelsea, the U of A’s very own Student Event Risk Management Coordinator and agenda nerd? Spend the next 2 minutes getting to know her a little better.

Where is your favourite place on campus?

Hmm, my favourite place is probably sitting in my office because I have a wonderful view — varsity field and stadium parkade.

Stadium Parkade

Actually there’s a lot of interesting things that happen up there. We’ve seen people drifting on the top of the parkade, and just watching parking wars when the dancers are on campus. But my favourite is when the trees are changing colour because there’s all the green and gold and it actually is really pretty up here.

Tablet or paper?

Probably paper. I like to write things down. I’m a huge agenda nerd.

Name one thing you’ve brought to work from home.

My plants. I have a mini jungle in here with all my different plants everywhere. Before I actually started working [on campus] I couldn’t for the life of me grow a plant. But for some reason once I started working here full-time, my plants started to thrive. They’ve moved many different offices with me [and have survived] as well.

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

Probably laughter. I’m very big into positivity and laughter and if I had a life without laughter it would be a pretty sad one.

If you won airfare to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I think it would be a tossup between Europe — because I’ve never been — or a tropical beach somewhere. I’m a very much a beach, chill-out, relaxing person but I think something about Europe and just going and exploring and hopping from place to place in Europe would be pretty exciting.

You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?

I would invite Ellen DeGeneres. I think she would be hilarious. I also really admire her. She gives back to the community. She stands up for what she believes in, she’s just a very positive person. So I think we’d have a really fun dinner. Or I’d invite author and speaker Brené Brown. She’s a researcher. She does things on shame, vulnerability, courage and I’ve actually read some of her books and I’ve seen her speak once. She just seemed like a very inspiring person. So I’d love to get to know her better.

If you could switch jobs with someone else on campus for a week, what would you do?

That’s a tough question. I think that there are a lot of interesting jobs that I’m not even aware of on campus but I’d probably like to do something with campus recreation. My degree is in Physical Education so that’s kind of an area right up my alley and I would just love to encourage people to be healthy and happy and active around campus.

What does “uplifting the whole people” mean to you?

I think that means supporting everyone to meet their goals and to reach their dreams and in whatever capacity that may mean to them. I think it could definitely look different for each person, so communicating with them to see what it is that they want to achieve while they’re at the university and then making sure that you can help them to get them to that [goal they’ve set]. That’s what uplifting the whole people means to me — working together as a team in a community.

If you could solve any problem in the world, what would it be?

I’d probably solve the traffic on 114th street because that’s a frustration for me every day. But more seriously, probably, there’s a lot of conflict in the world in so many different ways. And I think especially in the LGBTQ community, there’s a lot of hate and I think I would just try and make people listen to each other a little more. I think everyone deserves to be loved no matter what so I think that would be an area I would try and focus on.

What 3 words best describe your U of A experience?

I had a very interesting university experience, so I’d probably say unexpected, rewarding, and probably energetic.
