Sarah Wolgemuth, Assistant Dean of Students, University of Alberta

Have you met Sarah, our new Assistant Dean of Students, Student Life? Spend the next 2 minutes getting to know her a little better.

Where is your favourite place on campus?

It’s probably the edge of campus. I really like going on walks [along] Saskatchewan Drive and so I really like the perimeter. And coming from Residence, I’ve been spoiled. The entire East Campus neighbourhood is really lovely.

Tablet or paper?

It’s still paper.

Name one thing you’ve brought to work from home.

A picture of my kids.

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

Water. But something more exciting like an item would be my running shoes. They’re bright pink and a little dirty.

If you won airfare to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I think I would go to New Zealand for a hiking trip.

You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?

Right now it would be my sister.

If you could switch jobs with someone else on campus for a week, what would you do?

Oh my gosh, that’s a good question. I think either at the President’s or Provost’s Office. I would switch with a friend of mine who’s on maternity leave right now — Kathleen Brough. She’s Senior Administrative Officer in the Office of the Provost. I think I would see what her world is like.

What does “uplifting the whole people” mean to you?

I think it means our whole campus working together and making sure everyone’s voices are heard so that everyone: staff, students and faculty have the best possible learning and working environment that we can provide.

If you could solve any problem in the world, what would it be?

If I just magically had that power?

[Interviewer: Yep]

I think I would find a way to make opportunities for people to talk to each other. There’s so much conflict in the world that can maybe be solved by less violent or non-violent means. So if I had the opportunity to put the right people in the right room, they would have to sort out their differences and find solutions without going to war [that would] lead to people dying. I think I would do that.

What 3 words best describe your U of A experience?

I’d say very rewarding, very challenging at times and very relational. I’ve made great relationships here.
