Pandas Curling brings home the gold medal on behalf of Canada at the 2017 Universiade Games (photo: U SPORTS)U SPORTS)This week, the University of Alberta is celebrating a gold medal for Pandas Curling, a Steacie Memorial Fellowship, the launch of a new MOOC, and more! So, congrats to the following:

• Darren Grant, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science — awarded the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

• Ryan Nickifor, Golden Bears Volleyball — named Athlete of the Week

• Jesse Thomas, Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Design, Faculty of Arts — became the first foreign artist to exhibit at the Zhengzhou University of Light Industry in China, and the first faculty member from the Department of Art and Design to hold a solo exhibition in China with his show, Aesthetic Histories Aesthetic Histories

• Ruijia Wang, PhD Candidate, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science — received the Outstanding Student Paper award for her presentation at the 2016 American Geophysical Union meeting for her work on induced earthquakes in Alberta

• Pandas Curling — won the gold medal at the 2017 Universiade Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan

• Pandas Volleyball — broke a program record with their 17th consecutive win on February 3, defeating the MRU Cougars in straight sets

• Faculty of Native Studies — launched the new MOOC, Indigenous Canada, which explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in CanadaIndigenous Canada, which explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada

• Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology — named 22nd on a list of the top 65 similar programs from universities and research institutions around the world in the recent RePEc rankings

And finally, a pat on the back for the whole university after the U of A jumped to 31st in the Times Higher Education’s ‘most international’ rankings!
