UAlberta Congrats

This week, the University of Alberta is celebrating a Lifetime Achievement Award, major grant and funding recipients, several leadership awards, and more! So, congrats to the following:

• Allison Balcetis, Sessional Instructor, Department of Music, Faculty of Arts - received the Artistic Leadership Award at the 30th Annual Mayor's Celebration of the Arts

• Tamara Bliss, Faculty Lecturer in Dance and Orchesis Program Director, Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation - received the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award at the 30th Annual Mayor's Celebration of the Arts

• Mark Boyce, Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science - received $2 million in federal funding for his work on improved grazing practices to enhance grassland biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions

• Scott Chang, Professor, Department of Renewable Resources, Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences - received $690,000 in federal funding to develop and verify best management practices in agroforestry systems to increase the soil's ability to store carbon and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

• Janet Elliott, Professor and Canada Research Chair (Thermodynamics), Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - received the APEGA Award for Excellence in Education

• Amy Kirkham, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received an operating grant from Susan G. Komen, a US-based breast cancer funding organization, to investigate the protective powers of calorie reduction and exercise against heart damage from anthracycline chemotherapy for breast cancer

• Malcolm Lavoie, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law - received a 2017 Canadian Association of Law Teachers (CALT) Scholarly Paper Award for research co-published with Moira Lavoie

• Moira Lavoie, Student, Faculty of Law - received a 2017 CALT Scholarly Paper Award for research co-published with Malcolm Lavoie

• Sabrina Lorico, Student, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences - received a Healthy Campus Unit Award for contributing to a healthy campus and supporting students

• Travis Lovett, Student, Faculty of Law - won the 2017 Saskatchewan Provincial Court Judges' Association Essay Contest

• Vineet Prasad, Student, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine - part of a team that won the Healthy Campus Unit's Heroes for Health Challenge

• Pei Qin, Student, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine - part of a team that won the Healthy Campus Unit's Heroes for Health Challenge

• Aja Rieger, Flow Cytometry Core Manager, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a 2017 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry Shared Resource Lab Emerging Leaders Award

• Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez, Assistant Professor, Department of Renewable Resources, Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences - received $1.07 million in federal funding for his work on the greenhouse-gas intensity footprint of perennial versus annual cropping systems

• Luan Wang, Student, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine - part of a team that won the Healthy Campus Unit's Heroes for Health Challenge

• Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, Associate Professor and Director of Autism Research, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - sharing $2.08M in funding as a national research lead in the early detection of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and early interventions

• Eco Car Team - placed second in the prototype category at the 11th annual Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition with their zero-emissions vehicle, Sophie

• Ingenuity Lab - received $1.7 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada towards developing carbon nanotube mesh to soak up and reuse oil spilled in water

Congratulations to the 75 faculty, staff and students recognized for their achievements at the Celebration of Excellence in the Faculty of Arts event!

Finally, a pat on the back for our whole community as the University of Alberta was named one of Canada's greenest employers for the ninth straight year!
