Since it was first awarded in 1996, the University Cup has captured special recognition on our campuses. Steeped in university history and traditions - the cup itself dates back to Athabasca Hall in the 1920s - it has become the highest honour conferred on a faculty member at the University of Alberta.

It celebrates academics who bring together:

  • Outstanding teaching
  • Leading research
  • Exceptional service to both the university and broader community

This year, two academics were awarded the prestigious University Cup:

Dr. Chris Le joined the University in 1994 as a Killam Post-Doctoral Fellow. In 2011 he was selected as a Distinguished University Professor, a position he still holds today. He was elected as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom in 2016. He has obtained more than 23 million dollars in research funding, has 250 referred journal publications, 10 approved or pending patents, 27 non-referred publications and has done 400 conference presentation and abstracts. His research links chemistry to toxicology, clinical medicine and public health with three major themes: arsenic chemistry and toxicology, DNA damage biomarkers, and novel techniques for protein detection, enabling trace-level, environmentally and clinically relevant exposure and outcome research.

Dr. Anne Naeth joined the University in 1988 as a Research Associate and Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science. She is presently the Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. She has published over 100 refereed journal articles, over 200 scientific reports, nearly a dozen refereed books and other major publications, 250 research articles in conference proceedings and authored over 200 technical reports. She has chaired and worked as a committee member for numerous local, national and internal professional meetings and activities. She has worked for decades as a scientific advisor for land reclamation with Parks Canada and completed numerous restoration projects for parks.

Chris Le and Anne Naeth were awarded the University Cup at a special reception held in their honour on October 12, 2018.
