Dear colleagues,

I am writing today to announce that Dr. Kerry Mummery has agreed to extend his term as Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR) by one additional year. Dr. Mummery’s term will now end on June 30, 2021.

As you are aware, the University of Alberta received an 11% cut ($65.9 million) to our provincial funding in the Government of Alberta’s 2020 budget. Combined with the 6.9% cut in the October 24, 2019 budget, the total reduction amounts to $110.3 million over the past year. The backdrop of this budget, combined with the rapidly changing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, all contribute to an outlook for us that can only be described as historically unprecedented for this institution. We have major challenges ahead of us.

Because of these uncertainties, the President and I have made the decision to not proceed with the appointment of a new Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at this time. Instead, we are grateful to have the opportunity to benefit from the strong, experienced leadership of Dr. Kerry Mummery to steer the Faculty through these challenging times.

I would like to thank the KSR Dean Selection Committee and the entire KSR community for their thoughtful engagement during the recent search process for a new Dean of the Faculty.

Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
