Former University of Alberta Provost and Vice President (Academic) Carl Amrhein is retiring from the University of Alberta and will be joining the Aga Khan University as Provost and Vice President (Academic).

Carl joined the U of A in 2003 as Provost and Vice President (Academic) and as a professor of geography. He came to the U of A after 17 years at the University of Toronto.

Carl has led an esteemed career as an academic, administrator and public servant. As provost, Carl’s leadership was critically important in moving ahead initiatives at the institutional and faculty level with the primary goal of enriching student experiences. Carl was also a champion for the U of A, Alberta, and Canada on the international stage, building strong and broad research and teaching partnerships with organizations such as the Aga Khan University, as well as leading institutions throughout Germany and China. In 2014 he was seconded to Alberta Health Services, serving as official administrator, and in August, 2015, Carl accepted a secondment with Alberta Health as the deputy minister of health.

We wish Carl and his wife, Ellen, every success in the next chapter of their lives.
