I am writing to advise that Gerald has resigned his position as Vice-Provost (Learning Services) and Chief Librarian, effective July 31, 2017, to become the Carl A Kroch University Librarian at Cornell University.

Mr. Beasley joined the University of Alberta as Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian on July 1, 2013. During his tenure, he has provided strong and effective leadership for the Learning Services portfolio. He reviewed the Libraries’ strategic mandate and created both a Student Library Advisory Committee (SLAC) and an Aboriginal Student Internship program. He developed a strategic/sustainability plan for the University of Alberta Bookstore and established the Copyright Office. He engaged in the planning of the Libraries’ south campus high density storage building, the Research and Collections Resource Facility (RCRF). In general, Mr. Beasley has continued to transform the libraries into a more open, sustainable and responsive system of collections, services and spaces, a transformation that has helped to ensure long term sustainability and excellence.

I would like to thank Mr. Beasley for his leadership and service to the University and wish him well in his new position at Cornell University.

The search for a new Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian will be conducted in the 2017–18 academic year.

Steven Dew

Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
