After extensive consultation with representatives of the Faculty of Science regarding the needs of their faculty in the short term, I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Frank Marsiglio has been appointed Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science for the period of October 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.
Dr. Marsiglio joined the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science in 1997, and is currently Professor and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in that Department. Previous roles at the University of Alberta include Acting Chair of the Department, and Director of the Theoretical Physics Institute. Dr. Marsiglio is a well-respected scholar and administrator in the faculty, and an individual who is well-positioned to lead the faculty in the coming months.
Dr. Jonathan Schaeffer announced in August that he would be stepping down as Dean of the Faculty of Science, effective October 1, 2018. Over the next eight months, we will engage in a search for a new Dean of Science in accordance with the UAPPOL Faculty Dean Selection Procedure.
I want to thank all those members of the Faculty of Science who offered their thoughts and perspectives to me in recent weeks. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Marsiglio on his new position.
