The U of A community has been busy in our absence. Over the past weeks their achievements have attracted praise and recognition in many forms: awards, fellowships, prizes, scholarships and more. So, congratulations to the following:

  • Simaan Abourizk, Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - received the APEGA Excellence in Education Award
  • Michael Aherne, Mentor, Peter Lougheed Leadership College - received the 2018 UAlberta Advocate Award
  • Margaret-Ann Armour, Associate Dean (Diversity), Faculty of Science - inducted into Edmonton's Community Service Hall of Fame
  • Lorne Babiuk, Former Vice-President (Research) - received the 2018 John G. Fitzgerald Award from the Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease
  • Billy-Ray Belcourt, PhD Student, Department of English and Film Studies, Faculty of Arts - won the Griffin Poetry Prize, an Indigenous Voices Award, and the Robert Kroetsch Award for his collection, This Wound is a World; received a Trudeau Scholarship from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation
  • Barbara Billingsley, Professor and Associate Dean (Graduate Studies), Faculty of Law - received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award for Legal Scholarship from the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch) and the Law Society of Alberta
  • Grace Cleveland, Student, Faculty of Law - received the Hon. Cecilia Johnstone Equality Award
  • Norma Dunning, PhD Student, Department of Educational Policy Studies, Faculty of Education - won the Danuta Gleed Award for her collection, Annie Muktuk and Other Stories
  • Carole Estabrooks, Professor, Faculty of Nursing - received a 2018 J Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research, and inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame
  • Nadele Flynn, PhD Student, Department of Renewable Resources, Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences - received a 2018 Polar Knowledge Canada Northern Resident Scholarship
  • Fraser Forbes, Dean, Faculty of Engineering - named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering
  • Michael Frishkopf, Professor and Director of the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology, Department of Music, Faculty of Arts - received the 2018 Community Scholar Award
  • Lise Gotell, Professor, Department of Women's & Gender Studies, Faculty of Arts - named the new Landrex Distinguished Professor
  • Philip Halloran, Professor, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a 2018 J Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research
  • Joanna Harrington, Professor, Faculty of Law - received a 2018 CALT Award for Academic Excellence
  • Garrett Harris, Graduate Student, Faculty of Science - awarded best poster at the International Kimberlite Conference
  • Bill Hodgetts, Associate Professor, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine - received the President's Award for outstanding contributions to the Canadian Academy of Audiology
  • Glen Jickling, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received the Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize from the American Academy of Neurology
  • Brittany Johnson, PhD Student, Department of English and Film Studies, Faculty of Arts - received the AWA Bente Roed Graduate Student Award
  • Mijung Kim, Associate Professor, Department of Elementary Education, Faculty of Education - together with Suzanna Wong, won the International Science Education Conference Best Paper Award
  • Glen Loppnow, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science - named a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada
  • Robert Marquette, Student, Faculty of Law - won the Law Society of Alberta President's Award
  • Andrew Morgan, Graduate Student, Department of Elementary Education, Faculty of Education - received the faculty's 2018 Graduate Teaching Award
  • Paul Paton, Dean, Faculty of Law - named to the 2018 International Directory of Global Leaders and Influencers in Legal Business
  • James Pinfold, Distinguished University Professor, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science - received a 2018 Killam Prize
  • Prem Pokharel, PhD Candidate, Department of Renewable Resources, Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences - won the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) Proquest STEM Award
  • James Shapiro, Professor, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received Diabetes Canada's Lifetime Achievement Award
  • William Shultz, PhD Student, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts - received a Trudeau Scholarship from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation
  • Malinda S Smith, Professor, Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts - named a 2018 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellow
  • Michael Steele, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science, Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences - received the Cargill Animal Nutrition Young Scientist Award from the American Dairy Science Association
  • Kim TallBear, Associate Professor and CRC in Indigenous Peoples, Technoscience, and Environment - named a 2018 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellow
  • Janice Williamson, Professor, Department of English and Film Studies, Faculty of Arts - received a 2018 Academic Woman of the Year Award
  • Suzanna Wong, Postdoctoral Fellow, Faculty of Education - together with Mijung Kim, won the International Science Education Conference Best Paper Award
  • Michael Woodside, Professor, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science - awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship
  • AlbertaSat - received the 2018 Community Leaders Award
  • Alberta Diabetes Institute - received a CASE Circle of Excellence Award and two IABC Capital Awards for the Portraits of Diabetes campaign
  • Bruce Peel Special Collections Library - received a 2018 RBMS Leab Exhibition Award for Tinctor's Foul Treatise (curated by Andrew Colin Gow, Robert B. Desjardins, and François V. Pageau)
  • Parkland Institute, Faculty of Arts - received a $1 million gift to its endowment fund from an Alberta donor who asked to remain anonymous
  • Research at the Intersections of Gender Team - composed of professors Sara Dorow, Lois Harder, Nat Hurley, and Susanne Luhmann, the team collectively received a 2018 Academic Woman of the Year Award
