The year was 1972. The #1 song on the music chart was American Pie by Don Mclean, the top movie at the box office was The Godfather, and David Magee, Alice Nakamura and Lorne Tyrrell began their careers with the University of Alberta. That was 45 year ago. Now, in 2017, the U of A community has come together to honour these and other faculty and staff who are celebrating milestone work anniversaries, marking, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years of service. Their work was celebrated at a ceremony on December 7. Friends, colleagues, and loved ones (who were acknowledged and thanked for "sharing" the honourees with the institution), all came together in a show of thanks and support. In total, 193 faculty and staff were celebrated.
In addition, the 2017 Achievement Award for APOs, FSOs and Librarians were awarded to Catherine Anley, Human Resource Services; Martin Davies, Pharmacology; Kerrie Johnston, Chemistry. The 2017 Support Staff Recognition Awards were handed to Darryl Hopkins, Libraries; Gloria Strathern, Law; Rosa-Ileana Strelkov, Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science. Recipients of both awards were nominated by peers and co-workers.
