Today Alberta Health Services (AHS) informed us that a member of our University of Alberta community on North Campus has tested positive for COVID-19 and is recovering in isolation.

On behalf of the U of A community, I would like to extend our best wishes for a full recovery.

As I wrote earlier this week, patience, understanding, and mutual support are essential in moments like this. To anyone who may be wondering if you have been exposed to this confirmed case of COVID-19, I want to assure you that Alberta Health Services (AHS) are in direct contact with the individuals who may be impacted. AHS is providing these individuals with the information and guidance that they need at this time. Out of respect for the individual and privacy laws, we will be unable to share further details.

The safety and wellbeing of every U of A community member are paramount. That’s why our Public Health Response Team and Emergency Management Team continue to work closely with AHS to uphold the safety of our campuses. This is exemplified in our communities’ efforts to maintain physical distancing through our swift transition to remote teaching, learning, and work.

I understand that the news of this first confirmed case may be upsetting to members of our community, and cause further concern in an already very uncertain time. Resources are available if you, or someone you know, is struggling or needs a little extra support. Please check-online to find out more about our campus supports and those available in the broader community.

Although AHS has informed us that the risk to our greater U of A community remains low, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you to visit the U of A’s COVID-19 website for self-care tips and steps you can take to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. From physical distancing to washing your hands, every step, big or small, helps.

Remember, if you feel unwell, AHS’s online self-assessment tool is now live and easy to use. You can also call Health Link at 811.

Again, please continue to check the U of A’s COVID-19 website for the latest updates and information.

I want to thank everyone again for their compassion, patience, and adaptability as the situation around us continues to evolve.

Take care,

David Turpin
President and Vice-chancellor
