Have you met Marc, printmaking tech in the Department of Art & Design? Spend a few minutes getting to know him a little better.
What's your first U of A memory?
Coming here for my job interview in '81. I don't think I even knew where Edmonton was… I was in Toronto at the time. I stayed at a hotel on Whyte and I took a taxi to campus because I didn't realize how close I was.
PC or Mac?
Macs - we started using Macs for photoshopping related to digital dark rooms, so that's what I've grown up on here. I remember when we first brought the little Mac Plus computers onto campus.
If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?
I'd like to see Agnes Obel or Andrew Bird. Or maybe Hannah Georgas.
If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?
There's so much… how to narrow it down? I think cultural anthropology or film studies would be interesting. There's aspects of engineering and medicine that would be cool to get into, too.
What's your go-to snack?
The bento box from Kyoto or the pear and gorgonzola pizza from Rosso.
What's something your coworkers don't know about you?
I wish that I had started my own restaurant. Before I came here, I was poised to get my cooking ticket in Toronto.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
I would say, "make some shrewd investments and put more money away."
What is the most boring thing about you?
I think that I waterpik and floss my teeth, maybe.
Your friend is visiting Edmonton for the first time. Where do you take them?
I'd take them on a tour of my favourite spots and haunts: there's a couple places in the river valley, a couple favourite coffee places and restaurants… the river valley is the real gem, though.
What's your favourite distraction?
One of them is swimming, especially if I get my own lane.
Marc Siegner is a printmaker and artist living and working in Edmonton, Alberta. He completed his Masters of Visual Arts at Norwich University, Vermont in 2003. His print and installation works have been exhibited across Canada and internationally including: Brazil, China, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Slovenia, Thailand, Turkey, and the USA. He is co-founder of the Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists (SNAP). His work is collected by: The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Canada Council Art Bank, The Art Gallery of Alberta, and corporate and private art collections both in Canada and internationally.
