When the Royal Society of Canada announced its 2019 class of new Fellows and Members this morning, three U of A scholars stood among them. Congratulations to Liang Li, Yang Liu, and Zubia Mumtaz on this outstanding accomplishment!

Liang Li — Department of Chemistry

Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

Liang Li is a Canada Research Chair in Analytical Chemistry. He is best known for developing ground-breaking techniques for advancing proteomics and metabolomics research using mass spectrometry. He is a pioneer in creating metabolomics tool for comprehensive analysis of small molecules with transformational impact in disease biomarker discovery and biology studies. Yang Liu — Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Yang Liu is the Canada Research Chair in Future Water Services and an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Sustainable Urban Water Development. She develops innovative and economical, health-protective and environmentally friendly technologies used by the wastewater industry, as well as local and municipal governments, to provide Canadians with clean drinking water and wastewater services. Her research thus fosters the development of healthy communities.

Zubia Mumtaz — School of Public Health

Zubia Mumtaz is an international leader in global maternal and reproductive health. Her research brings cutting-edge science and scholarship to address a key contemporary challenge — how can we reduce maternal mortality among poor, socially marginalized women living in fragile, often conflict-affected countries. Her policy-relevant research has been directly translated into national and global maternal health policies. Numerous research fellowships and grants confirm her outstanding achievements.
