News this morning of last night’s suspected terror attack here in Edmonton has shocked all of us. On behalf of the University of Alberta, first let me express our concern for the individuals who were injured in the attack and wish them well in their recovery. We also extend our support to their families and friends.

I would also like to join with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Rachel Notley, Mayor Don Iveson, and Edmontonians in affirming that one of the core strengths of our city is its diversity and openness to all. While we recognize that no place is free from discord and intolerance — our city included — we also know that Edmonton is a tolerant, inclusive community made up of people from all over the world. The community of the University of Alberta reflects Edmonton’s multicultural fabric and we value this multiplicity as the source of creativity essential to the growth of new ideas and knowledge.

Incidents like this are intended to drive a wedge between us and heighten our differences. Let us instead unite and stand against ideas and actions that seek to divide us. In the wake of this event, let us strengthen our commitment to equality, inclusion and peaceful coexistence, rejecting racism, violence and isolationism.

David H. Turpin
