Have you ever walked across campus and thought - I wonder what interesting safety fact would apply to this very spot? Well next week, wonder no longer! Howard Pruden (Fire Safety Advisor) and Linda Hui (Coordinator, Emergency Management) will be sharing stories and facts during a Safety Fest walking tour and as a preview, we've pulled together a few interesting points of interest here:

Paintball?

Have you ever spotted police or fire trucks in front of Dent/Pharm? Turns out that the vacant parts of the building are used as a training site for search & rescue, fire, and police. The tactical team has quite literally left their mark, as evidenced by a few paintball marks on walls.

Reach into the Sandbox

When was the last time you reached into a sandbox? Maybe it's been a few years, or maybe it was just last week - in either case, we have sandboxes across our campuses - like this one found in front of SAB. Why are they there? Because this is Canada, and our winters are icy.

Recycled Water

If you were to ask a faculty or staff member to describe what our campuses are like in the summer, they are likely to retort with a single word "beautiful." The flower beds all come to life with greenery in the warmer months, and can do so thanks to the testing of our fire pumps. Yes, you read that correctly - we can thank the U of A's Water Recovery Program (which reuses the water from our annual fire pump testing) for keeping our flower beds well hydrated.

Look Out for Bears

Yes, the real ones - not on our campuses, but out in the field. The Field Research Office and EHS run bear awareness and safety training for researchers who could happen upon a few close encounters while out in the wilds of Alberta (or any other forest wear bears may frequent).

Safety Fest 2018Safety Fest 2018 happens Sept 10 to 15 (11 am to 2 pm) all across campus (and beyond!). Meet your safety & wellness providers, vote for your favorite to win the "Hard Hat Cup," and join our safety storytellers for a stroll across campus. We'll have popcorn, armoured vehicles, a wellness dog, and the HazMat Team - stop by!
