You may have noticed some increased construction around HUB Mall and Residence. As part of a campus-wide security initiative, driven by the University of Alberta Safety & Security Committee, a review of safety and security at HUB Mall and Residence was recently completed through a third-party consultant, Urban Security Innovation. One of the first initiatives to result from the review is to increase security on HUB Mall ground-level doorways. In addition, the university will secure access to HUB Mall through other entry points, including loading dock areas and pedway connections from adjacent buildings.

Keyed locks will be installed on most exterior ground-level stairway doors that provide direct access to student residences. These doors will be locked at all times, and will only be accessible by residents.

Card access controls will be installed on ground level stairwell doors located next to breezeways, accessible entrance points, and pedway connections to HUB Mall. These doors will be open during HUB Mall business hours, but will be locked after hours. Card access will only be given to residents of HUB Residence and HUB Mall tenants.

The LRT will be fully accessible from HUB Mall during business hours. Outside of HUB Mall's business hours, the University LRT station will only be accessible from street level; there will be no changes to when the LRT can be accessed from the street level.

Work to replace all affected doors began in early July 2019. All work will be complete by, and changes will be implemented on, August 20, 2019.

HUB Mall will be closed on Friday, July 19, 2019 for scheduled, annual transformer maintenance, unrelated to this project.

Replacement of HUB Mall doors will be conducted on a rolling basis, with temporary access disruptions to select doorways throughout the duration of the project. Affected areas, which will change daily, will be clearly marked. Alternate access points will be identified to building users.

Please note that workers will be present throughout HUB Mall, including stairwells, during the work.

Installation will be complete, and changes will be in effect, on August 20, 2019.

  • Keyed locks have been installed on most exterior ground-level residence stairwell doors. These doors will be locked at all times and can only be accessed by HUB residents.

These access points will be locked after hours. Card reader access controls have been installed on these doors. This includes the LRTpedways.
