Classes started up this week, and campus life has resumed to some extent. Most employees continue to work remotely, of course, and most courses are online. However, some buildings, businesses, and services on campus have re-opened.

If you're coming to campus this fall (take a moment to watch this video about visiting campus), here's what you need to know about the buildings that are open and how you can access them.

Members of the university community can generally access buildings by using their ONEcard. Employees will still have access to any buildings, spaces, floors, and doors they had previously. The Students' Union Building (SUB), Van Vliet Complex (VVC), and Saville Community Sports Centre are the only exceptions here, and do not require a ONEcard for access.

If your ONEcard is not granting you access to a building, you can email bss.support@ualberta.ca for support. Don't have your ONEcard yet? Visit ualberta.ca/onecard for instructions.

Our campus maps have been updated with current building hours and closures (open buildings are coloured green) for all five campuses, as well as which entrances are open for specific buildings. Check the status of any building you might be visiting before heading to campus.

A list of building hours is also available here.

Some retail spaces and services have re-opened on campus. If you need to grab a meal, here are the places to go:

  • Dewey's (North Power Plant)
  • Chopped Leaf (PAW Centre)
  • Subway (SUB)
  • The Daily Grind (SUB)
  • Marco's (SUB)
  • Bar Burrito (SUB)
  • Edo (SUB)
  • Opa (SUB
  • Teapsy (SUB)
  • Filistix (SUB)
  • Remedy (CAB) and Remedy Express (CCIS) - open on September 8

Select services are also available, mostly by appointment:

  • Smiles Dental (PAW Centre, by appointment)
  • SUBmart
  • SUBprint (online orders only)
  • SUBphoto (by appointment)
  • University Wellness Centre (SUB, by appointment)
  • Pharmacy (SUB)
  • Bookstore (SUB)
  • Campus Food Bank (SUB, by appointment)
  • Student Life Central desk (SUB)
  • Bijan Optical (SUB, by appointment)

Many recreation facilities - including the Hanson Fitness and Lifestyle Centre, Saville Community Sport Centre, Wilson Climbing Centre, and others - have reopened with new safety measures in place. Others, including the Clare Drake Arena and the Curling Centre at Saville, are scheduled to reopen soon.

Several of these facilities now require you to book a timeslot in advance - you can do so here.

Most library locations remain closed (though curbside pickup and online course material services are available). Cameron Library is open with limited capacity - you can book your space here.

These locations are also available by appointment:

  • Bruce Peel Special Collections
  • University of Alberta Archives
  • Research Data Centre
  • Digital Scholarship Centre

Additionally, computer labs are available in Cameron Library, ECHA, and CAB - more info here.

For those members of the U of A community in Camrose, here's the overview of what's open and what's closed on campus:

  • The Forum, Wahkohtowin Lodge, and Learning Commons are open with reconfigured student spaces
  • Founders' Hall Reception Desk, Cashier's Office, Dean's Office, and the Bookstore (pickup only) are open with condensed hours
  • Monica's Cafe is closed; the Dining Hall is open for residence students only
  • Heatherbrae, Hoyme, & Ravine Studio Building are closed
  • The Augustana Library is offering curbside pick up

Finally, some common areas will be open for people to sit or study - you can find available spaces here. When in doubt, look for new signage for guidance on what's open, what's closed, and how to stay safe on campus.
